Night Owl or Morning Person?

I never thought I would be a morning person, but this is my first time to write on a deadline. Before my first contract, I worked on my writing whenever I felt like it. Not anymore! I have a full-time job, a two-year-old, and my next book is due March 1. Eek!

I'm excited about the story and about the writing journey. I'm learning more about myself and my process of writing. I now go to bed at 10pm and get up at 5am. I exercise three mornings a week, and I write four mornings a week. So far it's working out great for me - thanks to the new coffee maker I got for Christmas.

Are you a night owl or a morning person? Have you ever tried switching it up?

  2. Hi Julie,

Oh girl! A March 1 deadline? And a 2 year old? May God give you great grace and an anointing of ease as you push forward to meet this deadline. It sounds like you're using your time wisely and I believe He will enable you!

I'm more of a morning person, though if you were to wake me at 5a.m. you wouldn't believe it. *hee hee*

My proposal is at a publishing board right now where they're making a decision. I'm just asking the Lord to make me ready for whichever way things go.

  3. I've never felt like I'm one or the other, but lately I've been getting up at 6:30 (with my coffee too :)) and I love having that quiet time! It's so rare with little ones around.

  4. Julie, I'm glad you've found a routine that works for you and that you're excited about your story.

For years my hubby has gotten up at o'dark thirty. His job requires it, which I understand. What I didn't fathom was how he could actually enjoy throwing back the covers mere hours after night owl me had finally crashed--until recently.

I'd prayed for years for God to transform me into a morning person so I could actually speak intelligently to Gwynly before he left for for work. A few months ago the Lord did just that. I've been getting up at 5:30 a.m. Some days I even wake before the alarm. And, wonder of wonders, I like doing so. Just goes to prove an old dog, er cat person, can change.

  5. Ah, I am SUCH a night owl and medical school is killing me because of the early mornings. I love staying up late when the rest of the world is hushed. So awesome that you have a deadline to work towards!! And exercising and writing? You're an inspiration to us all!

  6. Tralalala. That's my morning bird voice. I try to stay up late, was very successful at it in college, but I'm a grandma at heart (not really, just an expression). I try to be asleep by 10! 10!

  7. You forgot to mention you also have a high-maintenance husband that keeps you on your toes constantly.

I love my mornings, and I love my nights. So I guess I am both.

  8. CJ - It's obviously working for you. I love seeing your art.
Julie - That's wonderful that your proposal is with the pub board! Get ready!
Sarah - I'm like you. My motivation to get up early was all about the peace and quiet.
Keli - That's amazing - and I bet your husband loves it. It's tough to get up when someone is still warm in bed.
Saumya - Thanks! Trust me. It hasn't always been the way. I think the crazier my life gets, the more disciplined I'm forced to become.
Wendy - I'm with you. I love going to bed at 10!

  9. Kevin - I have a full-of-energy husband who keeps me going! I need you to nudge me out of bed some mornings! :)

  10. Wow Julie--you are amazing! you work fulltime and a child and write a book!! I can't get out of bed in the morning but have to at about 6:30-- I WILL not excercize until later. Never was a morning person but do it if I have to.

  11. Yay for deadlines!

I am NOT a morning person. I like to get up around 8 and I like to work in the afternoon on writing. Morning is for bookkeeping and homeschooling.

  12. OK you win. You for sure have more on your plate than I do. I'll pray the Lord give you strength to get through this busy exciting time.

I actually am both a night owl and an early bird. Don't ask how that works, it really doesn't!

  13. Hallelujah for coffee makers! I'm naturally a night owl, but I haven't been able to be one for about eight years. I long for the day I can revert back!

    Good luck!

  14. Jill - I wonder if we'll be able to switch back when we get the chance. I can't believe I used to be able to sleep until noon on Saturdays in college.
    T. Anne - Thanks for the prayers. They work!
Erica - Yes! Yay for deadlines!
Terri - I can't take any morning workout classes that require a lot of coordination. :)

  15. I'm a morning person...and my husband's a night owl. He can't ever figure out why I'm falling asleep watching TV at 9:30 but when you get up at 5 a.m. every day, you're tired early! I slept until 6:50 a.m. today and it felt like I was sleeping in.

  16. Fitting excercise and writing in before going to work? Incredible! Even if I am up at 5am, I barely manage to complete my daily morning tasks before I need to leave the house to work. You're an inspiration!

  17. Stephanie - I know. Once you adjust to that schedule, it's tough to do anything else. I was asleep at 10:30 on New Year's Eve, and I didn't even feel guilty :)
Lynn - I guess I should clarify it's exercise or writing before work - never both on the same day! That thought just makes my head spin. :)
